Confirmed: OnePlus 6T will skip the headphone jack

The OnePlus 6T which is going to launch in the coming weeks will not have a headphone jack. The company has confirmed this to TechRadar's John McCann. All the OnePlus smartphones till the OnePlus 6 have a 3.5mm jack and even the company has used it as a marketing tool for the OnePlus 3.

On being asked as to why the "next OnePlus handset" is skipping the jack, Carl Pei said "When we started OnePlus, we set out to make the best possible smartphone, but making a great phone doesn't mean putting every component available into the device. You've got to make decisions that optimize the user experience, and understand that at times things that provide user value can also add friction. We also had to think about the negative side for our users."

He goes on to claim that, "we found 59% of our community already owned wireless headphones earlier this year, and that was before we launched our Bullets Wireless headphones. If we were to do that two years ago, the percentage would have been much lower and it would have caused a lot of friction for our users."

It should be noted here that Pei himself conducts such polls on Twitter and has earlier done the same for a couple of other features that go on to either being adopted or discarded.

Removing the 3.5mm jack will free up some space which will be used to improve the battery life among other things. But here, we already know that the OnePlus 6T will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, making the headphone jack, the second removal after the fingerprint sensor.

Users who buy the OnePlus 6T will be able to use their normal earphones and headphones as OnePlus will bundle a USB Type-C to 3.5mm connector.

However, OnePlus still wants to push for their own Bullets Wireless Headphones which might also be one of the reasons for the removal of the headphone jack. We also think that OnePlus might bundle their wireless headphones with the OnePlus 6T for the starting batches.

Whatever the reason may be, like the notch on the OnePlus 6, users will still adapt to the missing headphone jack on the 6T.
