Huawei has finally set its 2018 flagship contender out into the wild. The new Mate 20 series boast of powerful hardware and software but there are a few groundbreaking firsts with the Mate 20 that allows it to stand out in the world of Android smartphones.

The Mate 20 series consists of the first Android smartphones to be powered by a 7nm processor Kirin 980 and is also the first of its kind to wirelessly charge other such supported devices, including phones and headphones.

Huawei has also gone with Synaptics Chip-On-Film (COF) ClearView tech for the OLED panel on Mate 20 Pro assisted by ClearPad touch controllers. Essentially, Synaptics repositions the drivers right under the display by folding them, which gives more screen estate at the chin.

Huawei Mate 20 features a 6.53-inch full HD+ (2244x1080 pixels) IPS display, topped with a layer of Corning's Gorilla Glass. The teardrop notch on the front gives it an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. The panel is HDR10 compliant, which means, consuming content on this phone will be a delight.

It is powered by Kirin 980 chipset which is fabricated using a 7nm process. This is backed by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which is expandable by up to 256GB. The Mate 20 runs on EMUI 9.0 which is based by Android 9.0 Pie.

Huawei has sourced the lenses for its cameras from Leica and features a triple-camera setup on the rear. This includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide snapper and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. On the front, there's a single 24-megapixel wide-angle camera.

The Mate 20 has a 4,000mAh battery which supports fast charging, up to 58% in 30 minutes.

On the other hand, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, has a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution (3120x1440 pixels). The front of the Mate 20 Pro sports an iPhone-like notch which is similarly functional as well. This gives the Mate 20 Pro an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Mate 20 Pro also has an in-display fingerprint sensor unlike the Mate 20 which has a physical sensor on the rear panel.

The cameras on the Mate 20 Pro are far more advanced than the regular Mate 20. It comes with a 40-megapixel wide-angle lens, 20-megapixel super wide-angle lens and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. For selfies, the Mate 20 Pro comes equipped with a 24-megapixel sensor.

In addition to the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei also announced a third variant in the Mate series. The Mate X with a giant 7.2-inch AMOLED panel and a full HD+ resolution (2244x1080 pixels). It has a waterdrop notch on the front, just like the one on the regular Mate 20 which gives it 18.7:9 aspect ratio. Apart from the display, the battery also gets a boost and the Mate 20 X draws power from a 5,000mAh battery which supports fast charge.
