In a move by Google and Yash Raj Films (YRF), Google Maps will be replacing the blue navigation arrow with Aamir Khan's character, Firangi Mallah, from the studio's upcoming film Thugs of Hindostan. With the festivities of Diwali around the corner, Google is celebrating by giving users the option to activate this feature on their mobile devices be it Android or iOS.
The option is available only for two weeks.
Users can activate the limited time feature in three simple steps.
Step 1. Update Google Maps to the latest version.
Step 2. After the app is updated, search for your destination and simply tap on the icon next to the navigation button.
Step 3. Switch on the voice model on the maps.
Once enabled, the blue navigation arrow will be replaced by the character 'Firangi' atop his donkey, guiding you onward through your journey. The fun doesn't end here as there is a whole new voice model in the style of Thugs of Hindostan, so keep the navigation audio switched on.
This is the first time that Google has added an India specific Maps entertainment feature. The sole reason for this is the growing reliability of Maps and its increased use in the lives of everyday people.
Officials from Google have expressed their excitement at the partnership with YRF and at making your everyday commute a bit more exciting with the 'Thug' himself.
'We are truly excited to bring a first-time India-specific entertainment experience to Google Maps in India. As people gear up for Diwali and to watch Thugs of Hindostan, we wanted to do our bit by making their driving journeys more fun and playful. Huge thanks to Tanuja Khetwal, Manan Mehta and the entire YRF team for helping make this possible, and we wish the movie every success' said Neha Waikar, Product Manager, Google Maps.
YRF officials mentioned that they enjoyed working with Google to create a first of its kind marketing campaign to spread awareness about this film. It is the biggest film ever produced in Bollywood and they wanted to present it to the audience in a creative new way.
Creating another first, the cast will showcase Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Mr. Aamir Khan- two legends of Indian Cinema, together on screen. Thugs of Hindostan releases in all cinemas across India on 8th November.
