Recently, Qualcomm hosted an event at Maui, Hawaii where they showcased a slew of technology from the future. From processors capable of 5G to functioning prototypes of the technology, the event showed us a window into the future of mobile computing. One of the highlights of the event was their Snapdragon 8CX that was made for Windows 10 devices. The new processor will be a direct successor to the Snapdragon 850 processor.
The Snapdragon 850, the successor to the powerful Snapdragon 845 was a processor listed for use in mobile phones but the 8CX is more powerful in that it is being built solely for Windows-based devices. The processor has been built from the ground up to cater to the needs of the more powerful, demanding Windows devices. It uses a 7nm architecture and is said to be twice as fast as the Snapdragon 850 chipset.
The Snapdragon 850 was a very fast processor and it will be amazing to see what kind of a punch the Snapdragon 8CX will pack up its sleeve. The company has said that the performance of the processor should match an Intel i5's performance while running native Windows ARM-based apps. The older Snapdragon 850 was almost at par with the 6th generation i5 in all respects but the 8CX will be pitted against the latest generation of Intel processors.
The Snapdragon 8CX will be backed by an Adreno 680 GPU that is said to be capable of supporting dual 4K displays and can run 4K content at120fps. Additionally, the processor has an X24 CAT 2.0 LTE adapter that can (theoretically) download content at 2Gbps and upload at 316mbps. For enhanced AI capabilities, the processor comes loaded with a Hexagon 685 DSP that will support Cortana and Alexa out of the box. For storage, the processor has NVMe SSD capabilities allowing it to make use of the high-speed delivery from SSDs.
The processor has other advanced features as well such as Quick Charge 4+, Bluetooth 5.0 and better heat dissipation technology than any processor currently in the market. It also boasts a two-day battery life.
The Snapdragon 8CX will be the first chipset by Qualcomm to receive certification for Windows 10 platform. This step is necessary for users and companies to create devices that are always connected. We are eagerly waiting to see how the Snapdragon 8CX will fare against the existing Intel and AMD chipsets that dominate the market.
