Samsung announces Exynos 9 Series 9820 SoC, will power the Galaxy S10

Samsung has announced its latest flagship chipset, the Exynos 9 Series 9820 SoC, the successor of the Exynos 9 Series 9810 SoC that powered the company's flagship devices this year. The new chipset from the Korean giant will compete with the Snapdragon 8150 and the Kirin 980 chipsets and will power the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10 Plus and the Galaxy Note 10.

The Exynos 9820 chipset is based on the 8nm LPP (Low Power Plus) FinFET process that reduces the power consumption by up to 10% compared to the 10nm LPP process. The Exynos 9820 also optimizes the power consumption of the CPU and GPU through reduced operating voltage, idle, and leakage power.

One of the biggest improvements in the Exynos 9820 chipset is the addition of a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) to offload the AI-related tasks. The NPU will allow the Exynos 9820 to perform AI related tasks over seven times faster than the Exynos 9810.

The Exynos 9820 chipset uses Samsung's 4th generation custom designed CPU that uses a tri-cluster architecture. It consists of a custom dual-core big cluster together with 2 Cortex-A75 cores for optimal performance and 4 Cortex-A55 cores for greater efficiency. The new CPU is claimed to boost multi-core performance by up to 15 %, single core performance by up to 20% and boost the power efficiency by up to 40% when compared to the Exynos 9810 SoC.

Samsung has used the Mali-G76 MP12 GPU that has wider execution engines with double the number of lanes compared to its predecessor, resulting in improved performance and efficiency for complex graphics. The new GPU is claimed to offer up to 40% improvement in performance up to 35% improvement in power efficiency.

Its ISP supports up to five sensors including an IR sensor, 8K video recording at 30 FPS, 4K video recording at 150 FPS and uses the physically unclonable function for enhanced security.

The Exynos 9820 is equipped with an LTE-Advanced Pro modem that supports LTE-Advanced Pro modem and offers download speeds of up to 2 Gbps (Cat.20) with 8x carrier aggregation and 316 Mbps uplink. It is expected to be in mass production by the end of this year.
