Targus KB55 review (3.5 / 5)

Targus is a well-known brand when it comes to making computer peripherals. Their keyboards and mice are regarded as some of the best by professionals when it comes to real-world usage. The KB55 is a lightweight, ultra-slim and compact wireless keyboard from the company that can be your go-to device for typing on Windows, MacOS, iOS or even Android.

However, the major selling point of the keyboard is its lightweight. Being compact in nature it won't take up too much space in your bag as well.

The Good

The keyboard comes with the common QWERTY layout. Though you can get different AZERTY and QZERTY depending on the region of purchase. The plastic is sturdy and to keep the keyboard in place four rubber feet are given on the bottom of the device. It has a MacOS style layout, meaning the Windows key is replaced by the command (cmd) key. The top of the keyboard houses an on/off switch and a battery indicator.

It takes a departure from the usual mechanical keyboards which use large, tactile and clicky keys. Though those are great for gaming and working on a desk, they are not practical for people constantly on the move. The difference is that the Targus KB55 has a much smaller footprint than any other mechanical keyboard. It uses scissor style key caps which are tactile and register your every click on a button.

Even though it is a wireless keyboard, there is no noticeable delay in pressing a button and it corresponds to the desired task. The keyboard has a little bit of flex in the middle, but it won't be noticeable when you type for long periods. The mechanism used is a butterfly technology, which makes for great travel and a tactile feel. The buttons are responsive and they are rather easy to get the hang of. A couple of hours of typing on the keyboard will make you familiar with the entire layout.

It can connect to your devices via Bluetooth 3.0 which, let's face it, is a little old, but does the job. It would have been great if the keyboard had Bluetooth 5.0, enabling it to connect to multiple devices at a time and you would be able to switch between devices on the go. The keyboard has dedicated hotkeys allowing you to switch between operating systems. Simply press fn + Q, fn + W or fn + E to switch between Windows, MacOS or Android.

The Bad

Where the keyboard misses out is the unavailability of backlighting, which can make it a chore to use in dark conditions. Even the addition of Bluetooth 5.0 would have made it a more modern and future-proof product. Apart from that, there is no indicator for the caps lock or a dedicated number pad, which may be a necessity to many users. The addition of these features would have made it a complete package and appealing to a wider range of people.

The Targus KB55 is a great keyboard for people on the move. If you type a lot on your iPad or Android phone and want an easy going keyboard, this is the perfect choice for you. It is lightweight and easy to carry around, making for greater functionality and portability. The keyboard is a wonderful choice for those who want a physical keyboard that can be used in any conditions.
